Entertain Your Kids with Sporting Activities
Are your kids interested in sport? Do you think it would be beneficial for them to attend a new activity class? Find out how to choose the best sport and how to keep your children motivated when exercise is the last thing on their mind.

Childhood obesity is a growing cause for concern within the UK and it’s not difficult to see why. With calorie filled treats easily attainable and the latest and greatest video game encouraging youngsters to remain seated, it’s a slippery slope to a difficult situation, even with the due diligence of parents. There is certainly nothing wrong with sugary snacks and the latest game on a console when enjoyed in moderation, so why not compliment these activities with a sporting club, enabling your kids to exercise, make friends, enjoy some outside air and even pick up a new skill.

Choosing the best sporting lessons

When it comes to finding the very best sports class for your kids you could well find that the problem is too much choice rather than too little. From football to kickboxing, dance classes to swimming; where is the best place to start?

  • Ask your children. No matter what age your kids are they are likely to already have an idea as to what they enjoy. Do they collect football stickers? Perhaps a football class could be something they will enjoy. Is their favorite time of year those few days when Wimbledon graces our television sets? Then maybe a local tennis class could hold their interest. Your children will be far more likely to want to partake in an activity that they already enjoy.

  • Don’t assume. Were you a child prodigy in a certain sporting activity? Or perhaps you simply enjoy one sport more than any other? It is important to remember that your own interests are not necessarily the same as those of your kids. Pushing them hard to achieve something that you desire may have the opposite result, leading them to resent the activity and to do all within their power to avoid it.

  • Try, try and try again. The majority of organisations that run sports for children will allow you to attend a lesson before signing up for a full length course. This will give your children the opportunity to discover whether they actually enjoy an activity or not. Ideally you should provide your kids with the opportunity to try a new sport for a month or more though. Why not chat to the teacher of the class to discuss an initial trial period?

Keeping your kids motivated

We were all children once. We all know that motivation is something that kids can struggle with, particularly if it involves taking them out of the house and being active. That’s why it is so important to choose a sporting activity that your children will actually enjoy rather than loathe. Even enjoying the sport though, you may find that some additional motivation is required. Why not try a few of the following tips to see if they work for you and your family?

  • Offer a reward for attending a sporting class for a certain period of time, or when a certain achievement is reached.

  • Try to watch your children as often as you can when you have the opportunity, such as a football match, or a swimming competition. Your presence there supporting and cheering on your youngsters will help them to feel pride in their new activity.

  • Join in with the sport. You may not be able to attend lessons with your kids, but you can certainly join them after class has finished. Help your children to practice and show an interest in their activity.

Getting your children to enjoy fitness won’t necessarily be an easy task. Don’t give up when the going gets tough though, because as you persevere you may find that your kids actually start to enjoy it. Remember that enjoyment is the key to success; find an activity that they love and you won’t be able to stop them!
